With the WASB's Policy Reviewing service, a WASB Policy Consultant will review your entire policy manual or, if you prefer, only certain policies or certain sections of your policy manual. The Policy Consultant will provide your district with:

  • Written comments that identify policies that need updating and provide direction for such updates;
  • Your district's actual policies with stylistic suggestions (policy vs. rule), legal and cross references and organizational codes written on the policies themselves;
  • A list of general suggestions for policy manual development and organization, if applicable; and
  • If applicable, an organizational index that indicates the policies, rules and exhibits that your district currently has and suggestions for additional policies, if any.

If further assistance is needed following a Policy Review, your district can do the following without additional charge: (Available as part of your district's WASB member dues)

  • Contact the WASB Policy Consultant directly to ask specific questions about your review, to discuss your district's policy updating process and to discuss other Policy Review follow-up activities as needed by your district; and
  • Contact WASB Policy Services staff to receive sample policies and other information from the WASB Library Resources to use in your district's policy updating process.

With the WASB's Full Policy Manual Consulting, a WASB Policy Consultant will do the following:

  • Consult with your district to determine what you want your policy manual to be, what level of WASB involvement you want to have in the manual updating process and how your manual updating process should proceed.
  • Review and organize background materials received from your district using a standard coding system. Background materials include:
    • A current written policy manual.
    • School board meeting minutes for the past three years (or for a different period of time as requested by your district).
    • Current district-wide administrative rules, procedures and memoranda.
    • Current district collective bargaining agreement(s).
    • Current district handbooks.
    • Any other materials and information relevant to your district's written policies and administrative rules.
  • Using district information, prepare policy and rule update drafts on a section-by-section basis. Specifically, a WASB Policy Consultant:
    • Separates school board policy from administrative rules.
    • Clarifies current policy language.
    • Updates Policy Information to correspond with recent school board decisions, current legal considerations and current district practice.
    • Identifies policy concerns that need to be considered further by your district.
    • Clearly identifies the source of the information contained in the drafts (e.g., board meeting minutes, policy manual, handbooks).
    • Provides your district with electronic copies of policy and rule update drafts.

With the WASB's Policy Work Session service, a WASB Policy Consultant will meet with your school board and/or administrators, upon request, to discuss policy development in general or specific district policy needs. Policy work sessions are tailored to your district.

The fee for Policy Reviewing, Full Policy Manual Consulting and Policy Work Sessions is $80 per hour. Districts choosing the Policy Work Session service are also charged $55 per hour for travel time and are charged mileage and meal expenses.

Why an hourly fee rather than a set standard fee? A district pays for services based only on:

  • The extent of its particular policy needs; and
  • The amount of direct policy assistance it wants from the WASB.

The WASB believes this fee schedule is the most fair and equitable to member districts.
