Marvin Berkowitz, Ph.D.

Character education, while critical to the success of a democratic society, is nonetheless complicated and difficult to implement effectively. This presentation will outline the core elements of effective character
education, conceived as comprehensive school and classroom reform. The elements are based on
educational practice, rigorous research, and psychological and educational theory.

Marvin Berkowitz is the McDonnell Professor of Character Education and co-director of the Center for Character and Citizenship at the University of Missouri - St. Louis.

Turning Inspiration into Results

Deb Gurke

After attending the State Education Convention, you should feel renewed hope and excitement in making a positive change in your local school district. However, turning what you've learned into results back home can be difficult. This session provides time to reflect on what you learned and to engage with others from around the state. Talk about how you might integrate what you learned with your current board practices. What new questions arise as a result of what you learned? How can WASB provide continuing support?

Deb Gurke is a WASB board governance consultant.
